In a season that embraced themes geared towards protection and sobriety in a post 9/11 world, Marc Jacobs’ Fall/Winter collection stood out as one of the highlights of NY fashion week. Jacobs boldly reanimated throwback pieces from the eighties and nineties that proved beautiful to many, traumatic to some, but ultimately memorable.

The burning question before Marc Jacobs’ show this season was how he would follow up last season’s very controversial collection, which, with its’ somber mood and experimentation with volume, wasn’t a hit with everyone. Pre-show there was only one clue regarding Marc’s plans for his Spring/Summer 2006 collection – a marching band would somehow be involved.

Marc Jacobs delved into the world of experimentation this season with a dark collection that emphasized volume as a theme. But despite this more abstract approach, Jacobs’ collection pinpoints some of the season’s major trends, including luxurious velvet touches, fur-trimmed jackets and black for every occasion, proving that his directional line is a wearable one.

Marc Jacobs has never had a problem drawing celebrities to his fashion shows but now that he's risen to become new york's most influential designer he has reportedly started turning them away. This season, as it has been the past few seasons, the Marc Jacobs show was the hottest ticket in town. Collection-wise, after a few seasons of ladylike chic, Marc aimed his aesthetic a little younger for spring 2005.

Designer Marc Jacobs holds the biggest show of New York fashion week.
It's the biggest in terms of actual size - Marc's favorite venue is Manhattan's 69th regiment armory - a city-block sized building that features a ceiling 40 metres high.
And, although New York fashion week has its share of big name, big business designers, Marc's show has become the city's biggest in terms of significance within the industry.

Marc Jacobs’ show is a perennial must-see of New York Fashion Week – for the clothes, yes, but also for the event itself, which always includes a party-like backstage scene and a splashy, celebrity-laden front of house. This season, Marc’s collection was as exciting as his show - feminine but a little tough, conservative yet slightly perverse – it was a contradiction in terms that worked on every level.

Marc Jacobs - Fall/Winter 2002

After making smartly tailored clothes for the past few seasons, Marc Jacobs abruptly went rough this season - unfinished hems, raw edges, worn-looking fabrics, quirky colours - all were cleverly combined to create a symphony of thrift shop chic for Fall 2002. Is this a return to his infamous grunge collection of 1993 (the one that got him fired from his head designer job at Perry Ellis)? Click and find out.

Instead of putting on a straightforward fashion show for this season, designer Marc Jacobs decided to follow the suggestion of his business partner and do something a little bit different. Together with a handful of his famous female friends, they held a show for his colourful Spring 2002 collection, threw a beautifully presented perfume launch party and raised some cash for a number of good causes.
