Karl Lagerfeld - Spring/Summer 2007
Construction and proportion are never far from Lagerfeld’s heart, but this season he has worked them over into a remarkably trend-driven collection of androgynous tailoring, feminine volume, and super-high hemlines.

Karl Lagerfeld - Fall/Winter 2006
New York Fashion Week’s last show for fall 2006 was a first for designer Karl Lagerfeld who, after about 1000 years in fashion, had never shown a collection in the Big Apple. That all changed when Karl came to town to launch two new lines: Lagerfeld Collection, based in paris and formerly known as Llagerfeld Gallery, and Karl Lagerfeld a label that will be based in New York.

The Lagerfeld Gallery collection has always been an outlet for Karl Lagerfeld to channel his interests and his personal style. These days, that signature style is gaining ground in the popular market, after selling controlling interest in the company to Tommy Hilfiger, and his co-production with mass retail giant H&M. It seems that for all his peculiarities, people love Karl at his purest.

There's a new accessibility in Karl Lagerfeld's signature collection that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the multi-million dollar deal he's signed with Tommy Hilfiger. It seems Karl doesn't trouble himself with nonsense like commecial concerns.

Karl Lagerfeld designs for three labels- Fendi, Chanel, and Lagerfeld Gallery. Of these three labels, Lagerfeld has said that it is Lagerfeld Gallery that is most reflective of his personality. This collection was about evolution, a shift from a lean look and monochromatic palette to lightness, transparency and the use of colour.

Karl Lagerfeld always looks to the future for inspiration, but this season he reveals a softer more feminine quality. While other Paris runways were filled with low-waisted pants and micro-minis, Karl’s waistlines went up and his skirt lengths down. From the ski slopes to the office and then to the ballroom Karl Lagerfeld featured clothes for all occasions.

This season, Karl Lagerfeld was inspired by a subject very close to his heart – himself. All the unmistakable elements of the Karl Lagerfeld uniform were there: the high collars, the tight jeans, and the ponytails. This was the third season of Lagerfeld gallery’s collaboration with diesel jeans; and while jeans may not be what most people expect from a major fashion designer, Karl Lagerfeld insists they are the ultimate modern garment.

Sexiness is Karl Lagerfeld’s specialty. This season he blended strict, impeccable tailoring with wispy dresses, and denim jeans for a streamlined, sleek, sexy look. He also created an intriguing tension between extra short hot pants for very young, and lilac chiffon, a favourite of our grandmothers’s generation. The result was a sexy, elegant collection for his Lagerfeld Gallery label.

The Lagerfeld Gallery collection was long and lean this season, much like Karl Lagerfeld himself these days. A lover of all things graphic, Karl's spirit permeated every inch of this collection.
